Nope. You are mistaken. “Jap” is a shortened term for Japan(ese), but the way it was used during the world war II and after, it became a derogatory term. And your “Jewish -> Jews” vs “Japanese -> Japs” analogy is completely off since Jews is not an abbreviation for Jewish.
