There are some people who never seem to be able to get work. I mean they have top-rated skills, lots of knowledge, but no employers. Ever wonder why? Here are the Top 7 reasons that I’ve seen this happen.

1. Your Website. Now, I’m not to crazy about my own website at the moment, so I”m not casting stones. But here’s an honest observation — if you are promoting yourself as a Facebook Fan Page designer, a WordPress guru or Twitter Background creator, the least you can do is make sure your own website is pulled together.Using substandard graphics (I’m talking  cartoon clipart straight from Microsoft!), unattractive templates, etc. I’m pretty sure that you’re not getting the job.

 

2. Argumentative. Disagreements happen. Misunderstandings happen, but when you’re a control freak trying to dictate to your potential client how they should run their business, you’re probably not going to last long.  Here’s an example of what I mean — you’re a VA and you’re contacted by someone who wants you to do sub-contractor work for them. If the rates aren’t to your liking just politely decline and move on.Picking a fight over why they should pay you more or better yet, why their client should pay more for the service is the fast track to being blacklisted as a nut. See the beauty of being a VA means you can accept and decline jobs at your whim. Not that you can badger someone into doing your bidding (no pun intended).

 

3. Taxes. As VAs we’re all accountable for our own taxes — the good and the bad. Jabbering on about your personal accounting system when you get your 1099 at the end of the year is counterproductive and annoying.  If you don’t want the work for December tacked on at the end of the year, don’t submit your invoice until January. Can’t we all just get along?

 

4. Mis-communication of Availability. Things come up.  Sometimes you may get a project and BLAM! something happens so you need to extend the deadline. Most people understand that computer have a mind of their own and technical problems arise. But when this is chronic (with a litany of excuses tacked on for good measure), you’re not going to last long in this business. Word gets around fast in this industry.

 

5. Payment Systems. Okay, this is my husband’s pet peeve. When the job of paying  you gets to be harder than the job itself, it’s time to get someone else to do the job.  Most employers prefer to pay through Intuit, Paypal and other electronic means that don’t include finding stamps and mailing checks and money orders. If you’re a virtual assistant, getting paid virtually shouldn’t be a big deal, right?

 

6. No Communication. If your client emails you with a need to have something done and gives you a deadline, it behooves you (if you like getting paid) to answer them in a timely fashion. You see, you’re working for them, not the other way around.

 

7. Rounding Up Hours. As a VA we get paid for the work done. Most of us use timing systems to provide our client with accurate records. So, thinking that you can round up the time to the next hour is a good way to not work long in the industry.One of the largest selling points for our industry is that we only get paid for the time we are working – nothing less, nothing more. So stop trying to manipulate the clock, unless of course you’re trying to lose clients.

There are many uncertainties in today’s economy. Companies are downsizing to save from closing their doors altogether. This can lead to you or a family member losing your job. Here are some ways to cope with job loss.

Losing your job can leave you feeling a myriad of emotions. You might go from denial to anger to acceptance. It may take a while to get through all that you are feeling, but allow yourself the time to grieve. The emotions can seem like a death has occurred. If you are the one who is the principal breadwinner in the family, it can put a lot of weight on your shoulders.

After you have your time to deal with the loss of the job, don’t stop there. Many things have to be set in motion for you and your family.

• Inquire about unemployment benefits – Do you qualify for unemployment? If your company was downsizing then you almost certainly do. Call the local unemployment office and ask.

• Apply for unemployment benefits – Once you know that you qualify, go down to the office and apply. Most benefits take about a week or two before they kick in. The benefit period is usually thirteen weeks. This gives you time to get your finances in order and also to begin looking for another job.

• Check your financial situation – Even if there is another person in your household with a full-time job, the income will be cut after your job loss. Consider revamping your budget or instituting a budget to help manage bills during the intervening time you are without a job. This could mean more grocery shopping and less eating out. You won’t know where you can make cuts until you sit and look at the details.

• Check on health insurance – Many companies participate in COBRA which allows workers who have lost their jobs to continue paying for health benefits. The premiums are higher, though. If you can, see if your spouse’s job will allow them to change their benefits to include the family so there is no loss of coverage.

• Look for another job – Once you know how long savings and a single income can last, begin the task of finding a new job. Will you stay in the current field or change profession? Take the temperature of the market to know which direction to take.

• Assess your options – If the market has dried up in your area, will you consider relocating? Use the internet to look for out-of-state jobs and see if you get any offers. A good offer can lead to a new job in another town if you so choose.

Losing your job can seem like the end of the world. You will encounter a range of emotions at first. Then, there are steps to take to look after your family’s future.

Owning a business is hard work. And it can be extremely time-consuming. In order to have time to focus on growing your business, it may make sense to outsource some of the tasks. However, finding virtual help can be a challenge too. Here’s a handy checklist to help you find the help you need.

* How fast can they turn around your project? – You need to find a virtual helper who can meet your timetable. If they’re slow to turn projects around then your business is delayed. There’s nothing better than finding a contractor who can turn projects around quickly. However, be cautious. If a provider promises a turnaround time that seems too good to be true, it probably is.

• How do they deliver? – How does the contractor deliver their work? Do they use email? A content management system? Make sure the system isn’t too complicated and that it doesn’t cost you any additional money to use it.

• How do they charge? What are their rates? – Many contractors require a deposit. Make sure the rates and their payment policy meets your needs and budget. If you have a lot of work for your virtual assistant to manage, ask if there is a discount for large projects or ongoing work.

• Do they have references? Do they have samples of their work? – Before you hire, ask for references, testimonials and samples of their work. Then follow through and check references and review their samples.

• Will they sign an NDA? Will they sign a work for hire agreement? – If a virtual assistant or helper is unwilling to sign an agreement, move on. These agreements protect the both of you. They outline the work, the fees, and the delivery timetable.

• What do they do if you have a problem with their work? – Are there revisions included in the project? If so, how many?

• How do they communicate with clients? – Are they available via the telephone? Or do they manage their client accounts strictly via email? Additionally, are their communications professional? Do they get back to you in a timely manner?

• Are they experienced in the type of project you need? How many years have they been in business? – Depending on your needs, you may want a provider who is very experienced. However, if you’re willing to train, then enthusiasm and price may be more important considerations than experience.

• Does the contractor clearly explain their policies and procedures? Are they confident and inspire a sense of trust? – At the end of the day, how do you feel about this potential contractor? Do you feel confident in their ability to manage your projects and tasks?

If you do, then it’s time to take the leap. Give them a test project. Evaluate how you work together. If it all goes well then you can begin relying on them to manage your list of tasks.

If you’ve been focused on the online world, there are ways to reach offline clients that you may not have considered. Here’s a list of suggestions to reach your target market:

• Business cards are a must when marketing offline.

While you may think these little goodies are old hat, think again. They provide a quick, simple way to leave your complete contact information with a prospect. Print on the back as well and offer a free consultation, coupon for 20% off for first-time clients or something else that will attract attention.

• Local classified ads are relatively inexpensive and can attract clients who might never see an online ad.

Check with community papers, weekly shoppers, and even neighborhood newsletters. While the exposure won’t be as great as with a large daily newspaper, subscribers are often more loyal and actually read the ads, which can be great for your business.

• Small yard signs are another means for reaching local clients for your consulting business.

A simple message such as “Need More Customers? Call for a Free Consultation!” can attract untold numbers of leads. Check local signage ordinances, though, as you don’t want to be fined for violating the law!

• Brochures can be handed out, placed in inexpensive plastic holders, left on a coffee house bulletin board, or easily mailed to prospects.

You can create them easily in Microsoft Word and print them at home on professional brochure paper from the office supply store, or get them mass-produced at the copy shop for a few cents each.

• Local radio station ads might surprise you with their affordable price tag.

In fact, you may be able to get “free” advertising by hosting your own radio program or becoming a guest on local talk shows. Check with your local station manager to see what options are available.

• Local resource fairs or trade shows are great networking opportunities.

If your Chamber of Commerce doesn’t host one, organize your own. Find complementary but non-competing companies to set up booths, distribute sales and marketing materials, etc. Invite the public free and charge exhibitors a small fee to cover costs.

Offer a door prize drawing at your booth where entrants must fill out a drawing slip with their name, address, phone number and email address to enter. Use these forms to begin compiling a prospect list. Then select one name at the end of the day to win the prize. Be sure to publicize the event extensively and let everyone know about your business while it’s going on.

There are a myriad of ways to promote your consulting business offline. Look for ideas that others are using to promote their businesses and put your unique spin on them. Try a variety of methods because you’re never sure just what will pay off. Whatever you do, work hard to get the word out about your business, and soon word-of-mouth marketing will take over and your business will seem to grow on its own.

For many offline consultants, selling is the hardest part of being in business. Yet, without it, you’ll be eating your meals at the local homeless shelter before long. Writing the perfect sales pitch for your personality and style of communication will make the process of selling much more comfortable. Here are some tips for crafting a successful pitch.

First, realize that the goal of a pitch is not a sale – you’re hoping for the opportunity to meet with your prospect and provide them an overview of your services. You are not trying to close the deal with a sales letter or initial phone call! Reduce your expectations, and you’ll feel a lot less pressure.

Remember that you’re creating a relationship. Think about what you can do to be helpful to your prospect. You want to turn them into a contact, not into a customer right off the bat. Take it slowly.

Begin your pitch with a solid, attention-getting, opening statement. Let your specific audience know you are writing directly to them. You’re trying to make them want to know more about you and your business. Be creative – write something that your audience can’t ignore. Consider what you would want to hear if you were in your prospect’s shoes and write your opening for them.

Back up your statements with an anecdote. Include an example from your business. For instance, if you want your prospect to know that you can help her build a solid PPC campaign, give her the results from one you built for yourself or another client. Avoid jargon that might turn off your audience. Focus on the results, not on the process. As they say in the advertising business, sell the sizzle, not the steak!

Use statistics sparingly. While they serve to back up your statements, numbers can cause a prospect’s eyes to glaze over quickly. Focus more on human interest stories and personalized data to convince your audience that what you say is true.

Be sure to keep your sales pitch short. A long, drawn-out pitch will at best bore your listeners, and at worse, irritate them. If you want them to hear all you have to say, don’t say more than you need to. A short, interesting sales pitch offers you a much better chance of being heard from start to finish.

Include a response-getting closing statement. Invite your prospect to take action: Sign up for a seminar. Ask for a free report. Allow you to come in for a presentation. Whatever it is you want your prospect to do, ask them to do it! Don’t assume they’ll respond the way you want unless you ask.

If you’ll be mailing your sales pitch, be certain it’s grammatically correct, free of errors and that it’s been run through a spellcheck program. Grammatical errors and typos have a way of sneaking past even the most ardent proofreader, so proofread your sales pitch several times. Lay it aside for a couple of hours, then come back to it and proofread it again. It must be as error-free as you can make it for good results.

Remember that your sales pitch should provide the information your prospective client will need to make a decision to create a relationship with you. While you don’t want to tell them everything you know, it will help to give them enough information that they believe you can help them. You want them to feel only you can truly meet their need for Internet marketing assistance.

Once I was introduced to the wonderful world of PLR I started letting my fellow entrepreneurs know about this wonderful resource. I was really surprised by how many of them were worried that using PLR is really ethical. I got questions suggesting perhaps it was a form of plagiarism and Google will penalize their site because it would be duplicate copy and that was just the beginning salvos.

I was really surprised that folks were so resistant to this great time-saver and so I sought out more information just to be sure that I didn’t have a faulty understanding of how PLR works. Regardless of how much you love your business, there will always be times when you have trouble motivating yourself to work. It happens to everyone from time to time. And, during the slow times, you’re able to slack off a bit. However, a too-relaxed attitude begins to cause waves when a deadline is looming and you have a project to finish.

Use these seven tips to help you to meet any deadline:

1. Slow and steady wins the race.

Unless you’re dealing with a last-minute project, it’s likely that you’re given adequate notice about the deadline. Break each project into manageable increments and chip away at the project one manageable step at a time.

When you break a large project down into manageable steps, you increase your chances of successfully meeting your deadline exponentially. In fact, if you work at your project consistently instead of rushing to complete it at the last minute, you’ll likely be able to turn in high quality work well before the deadline.

2. Create measurable goals.

Working towards a deadline without measurable goals is like trying to lose 10 pounds in a month without checking the scale. Create predefined daily goals that allow you to receive feedback on your progress.

Provide further incentives for your efforts by indulging in a small reward (like a cappuccino) each day you meet a goal. The incentive may give you the extra boost of motivation you need to stay on pace to meet your deadline.

3. Overestimate the time line.

Rarely does a project run according to plan. There are always unanticipated obstacles to overcome. If you anticipate that you’ll need three days to complete a project, tell your client that you’ll need four or five days instead.

If you do happen to complete the project before your quoted deadline, your client will likely appreciate that you’ve “gone the extra mile” in order to turn the project in before it was due.

4. Hold yourself accountable.

A strong sense of accountability is 50% of the battle in meeting deadlines. You’ve made a commitment to turn the material in by a certain date; it’s your responsibility to ensure that you turn it in by the agreed upon deadline. When you’re tempted to procrastinate, remind yourself about the consequences of being deemed unreliable.

5. Put yourself in your client’s shoes.

Let’s say you’re getting married and you hire a bakery to create your wedding cake. If the bakery stated that your cake would be at the reception site by 3:00pm, you’d expect to see your cake by the agreed upon time, right? You’re counting on that cake, and its late arrival can ruin your wedding day.

In the same way, you’re providing a service that someone is counting on. Depending on the task, you could cost your company or client thousands of dollars by not meeting your deadline.

6. Let it burn.

If you tend to procrastinate, get the job done by lighting a fire under yourself. Do whatever you must to motivate yourself to get moving and stay moving. And generally, the more you have to lose, the more motivation you’ll find to meet your deadline.

Tell your wife she can spend every dime of your paycheck on a shoe shopping trip if you turn in your work later than the agreed upon deadline. If you lose, you’ll definitely learn a valuable lesson.

7. Offer a discount.

In your contract, include a clause that states that the client will be granted a 10% discount if the material is turned in after the agreed upon deadline. This will give your clients peace of mind, and it’ll motivate you to meet your deadlines so that you’re compensated fairly.
